2019 Jinhua China-Africa Cultural Cooperation and Exchange Week & Forum on China-Africa Economic and Trade Relations

On the evening of November 10th, the large event, “China-Africa Night Carnival”, took place in the downtown of Jinhua City. The Carnival introduced African culture through music, dancing, food, and art. On the stage, there were songs and dances, including “China-Africa forever friendship”, “Studying in Jinhua”, and “Voice of Africa”. There was also an African clothing show, a Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage acrobatic show, a Chinese traditional lion dance and many other performances that created a harmonious blend of Chinese and African culture. This was a unique opportunity for everyone present to experience the integration of Chinese and African culture.

In addition to the stunning art performances, African students from 12 countries (Liberia, Nigeria, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Djibouti, Somalia, Ghana, Tanzania, Lesotho, and Mauritania) have prepared and shared dishes from their own local cuisines. Among the dishes, there were Djiboutian mutton stew, Tanzanian ugali (black curry), Ghanaian fried rice, Ethiopian spiced chicken, Zimbabwean potato curry, sweet Moroccan mint tea, a Mauritanian specialty beverage called bisam, Lesothian (a fermented sorghum porridge), and many other delicacies.

It was exciting and enjoyable to taste the food from different African countries. The local people of Jinhua were touched by the enthusiasm of African students and couldn’t resist joining the carnival. One Jinhua citizen hugged Ghanaian international students and said that Ghana and China are good friends. International students from Africa also expressed how much they like to share their traditional culture. They also shouted out “I love China!”

Jinhua has a profound history of friendly exchanges with Africa. There is the African Institute of Zhejiang Normal University and a national think-tank in Jinhua. Also, the widely praised Musanze International College in Rwanda was built with the aid of Jinhua Polytechnic College. The campus of Jinhua’s Qiubin primary school has an African park, which is a great comprehensive display of African history and culture. More and more African businessmen come to Yiwu, Jinhua. There, they are looking for opportunities to expand their businesses through the world’s largest commodity market, known as Yiwu International Trade City.“The China-Africa Night Carnival” is an important part of the 2019 Jinhua China Africa Cultural Cooperation and Exchange Week. In the future, Jinhua will hold various events, including the China-Africa Economic and Trade Forum, exhibition and sales of “Jinhua tour of African brands”, and “Visual Africa” art works exhibition.
