Jinhua in the middle of China's Zhejiang province is home to 195 historical villages. Each of them has preserved their own characteristic cultural elements, waiting for you be discovered. You will live with a villager’s family in Yuyuan village in Jinhua for 10 days, all expenses will be paid by the organizers after your arrival in Hangzhou or Jinhua.

Conditions for application

We are looking for

  • students, teachers, and faculty members studying or working at universities, and
  • participants working in journalism, the media industry, film and TV industry
from Hongkong, Macau, or Taiwan to help us promote the Home+ model in the ancient villages of Jinhua.

The ideal participant should have great interest in and professional knowledge of Chinese culture, tourism, design, marketing, journalism or media. Of course, we also welcome experts in the other areas.

Life in Yuyuan village
During the session, we will provide many kinds of group activities. You will also have ample time to stroll around the village and experience the life in the historical village. You can also learn traditional crafts from handcraft experts and finish your own project tasks. Activities include:
  • Traditional crafts and experience folk custom such as grinding tofu, making rice cake, making Maci (麻糍, a local speciality), writing Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, making Bar lanterns, straw weaving, etc.
  • Lectures about traditional Chinese philosophy, Taoist culture and traditional Chinese architecture;
  • Experience the local hot springs, and cycling around the village;
  • learning tai chi and Wu opera;
  • Short trip to Jinhua downtown, Wuyi Shouxian valley and Wong Tai Sin ancestral temple;
  • Visiting technology and Chinese medicine enterprises in Jinhua.
During these 10 days, we’ll live with a villager’s family which has opened a Home+ homestay. They’ve already hosted participants of our former sessions, mostly foreign students of famous universities. All the hosts have already obtained a business license before starting this project. But don’t worry, we’ll eat together with the family and you’ll glad to know that the ingredients are all grown locally. They stem from the village’s land, the vegetable gardens and fish ponds. Each family’s condition of accomodation is different. It’s necessary to mention that you will be living in villager’s family—not a hotel.There you may either have a single room or you will share your room with a roommate. All houses are equipped with Western-style water toilets, air condition and 24 hours hot water supply. Each room has new bedding and most of the rooms have decorated just before the project started. Wifi is available in the whole village.
You don’t need to pay for anything during our project. We’ll catch you from the Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, of course, we’ll pick you up at Jinhua Railway Station if you go to Jinhua by train. We’ll afford all the expense during these 10 days, including food and Accomodation, transportation and entry tickets to the scenic spots. In return, we need you to finish some tasks for helping us promoting the project and the village you living in. You just need to pay for you plane tickets back and forth and travel insurance.
We will have some small groups to finish the tasks during the project:
  1. Write an article about the experience in Yuyuan. It will be put out on our website or you personal media: blog, facebook, youtube, etc. The article could be written about an aspect of the intangible culture of the village, building in our around the village or personal impressions of this session.
  2. Take photos, paint or sketch from nature of the village or the other work of art. Please provide a short introduction or links to your work during the application process.
  3. Prepare a plan for promoting the next session of Jinhua Homestay for Hongkong, Macau and Taiwan.
When applying for the project, please tell us which group you want to be in, what kind of experience or skills you have. We’ll discuss about the way of finishing tasks and the group on the first day of this project. After you back to your country, we hope that you can continue to promote our village and the culture on the newspaper,websites and your personal blog. To support your task, we’ll provide materials about the history, architecture and culture of Yuyuan village.
