Wong Tai Sin: From Shepherd to a Cultural Ambassador

The legend of Wong Tai Sin (aka Huang Daxian in Mandarin) has been circulated since Jin Dynasty (266-420) and has a history of more than 1,600 years. The folk literature, poetry and calligraphy, and local customs about Wong, all these intangible cultural heritages, are collectively referred to as the “Wong Tai Sin culture.”

In June 2007, Jinhua’s “Huang Daxian Legend” was listed in Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Heritage. In June 2008, it was also listed in the second batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Bright Future for Jinhua Homestay

From August 10-24, the 8th session of the Jinhua Homestay project was held at Jinhua Mountain, attracting 38 international students from 13 countries to experience traditional Chinese culture.


The 15-day event built a platform for communication between Chinese and international youth. The program allows Jinhua to display its contributions to the world, while also enabling international students to experience the charm of Jinhua and deepen their understanding of Jinhua's economy and culture.

Int'l Presence in Jinhua Mountain

It has been five years since the first session of the Jinhua Homestay, and till last year the project had held seven sessions at seven historical villages in five counties (county-level cities, or districts) in Jinhua. This year, the 8th session of the project chose the Lutian Village in Jinhua Mountain as its activity base.

Thirty-eight international participants from 13 countries—including Germany, Italy, South Africa, India, Poland, Colombia, and Croatia—spent 15 days at the Lutian Academy. Internationals Experience Chinese Arts

On August 18, in a lecture on calligraphy held by Lutian Academy, He Jianqiang, a member of the Zhejiang Provincial Association of the Calligraphy Review Committee, introduced the origin, history, and distinguishing characteristics of Chinese calligraphy to the international participants, as well as several masterpieces of the famous calligraphers of each dynasty. After the lecture, He began to teach the participants how to write the Chinese characters of Jinhua, 金华 (Jīnhuá) using the basic calligraphy strokes.
