Frangipani (common name: plumeria) is the national flower of Laos, where it is known as Dok Champ, meaning joy and sincerity in life. It grows into small shrubs, whose flowers are redolent with a sweet romantic fragrance. It can be seen throughout the country and is mostly used for decorating the country’s various monasteries. Commonly received as a welcoming gesture is a string of yellow and white plumeria flowers, which are to be worn around the neck. Additionally, it is used in cuisine and incense and is said to harbour medicinal properties.
