The National Plants of Togo

The arlo tree is of great importance in Togolese culture, both for its practical and symbolic uses. Its branches are often used as a toothbrush due to the fact that its fiber splits into strong bristles when soaked in saliva. The arlo tree holds much significance in Togo, whose capital city, Lome, derives its name from the plant. In a popular story, a hunter named Kittley settled the area, and named it ‘alomel’, after the tree’s supposed beauty. Over time the name was shortened to Lome, as the city is now known.
