It is harvest season for ginger. In the village of Dongqing, Suxi Town of Yiwu, many customers have come to the fields to buy ginger grown by local villagers.

Dongqing Village has had the custom of growing ginger throughout its history. Due to its unique water, soil, and climate and villagers’ special planting techniques, the ginger grown in Dongqing has no filaments and tastes quite tender. Ginger that is typically available in the market sells for four to 10 RMB per kilogram, while Dongqing ginger can be sold for about 20 RMB per kg. Many customers often come to the village to buy the ginger after they have tasted it once.

In recent years, with the aim of building a characteristic agricultural industry and boosting rural revitalization, Suxi Town has been continually adjusting its agricultural planting structure, vigorously developing characteristic agriculture, and broadening channels for farmers to increase their incomes. To date, the planting area of ginger in Dongqing Village has reached more than 1.3 hectare. (Text and photo by Yu Yiping, translated by Shen Yingying, edited by Mariam Ayad)
